Is it possible to delete everything on the hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro instead of Vista? however there is a catch... if you go to 64 bit (there are both 32 and 64 bit versions of XP and Vista) then you will have compatibility problems with drivers and some programs might not like it.

Trying to network Vista to XP
Start the VM software, create a file to use as the hard drive image, select serial, parallel, sound etc if needed, map to a floppy or CD with the source OS and install away. The host can run XP, Vista, or whatever the future holds, with fully optimised drivers for the hardware it is running on.

We already have the ability to define multiple (separate) instances of logons per Vista/XP installation.... why waste a two processor core, memory, SLIx2, etc. on one person? I've yet to even come close to maxing out my AMD dual core CPU or my memory. (Hard drive bottleneck is another matter.

So now I am able to boot the system with both OS. griffin, I have tons of software installed on vista so obviously it is not practical solution to format hard drive and start with fresh installation of XP. I had really hard time installing IIS 7.0 on vista and vista seems to have lot of compatibility issues .

Do check for compatibility with all your old software before buying. Vista is notoriously incompatible in this regard. It doesn't even fully support Office 2000, and that's a (albeit I have XP on my other computer (although the hard drive did crash once), and have heard that Vista has too many bugs.

So either way you go, you can't use WinXP to repartition & reformat the external drive. XP can't format a large drive as FAT32 (I don't know about Vista). Intentional limitation of XP placed there by Microsoft to discourage using FAT32 because it is compatible with other non-Microsoft operating systems.

Yikes, I hope you didn't "upgrade" to Vista from XP (???), that would be REALLY REALLY bad! Please tell me it's a clean install and you did a block level hard drive integrity check first? I forgot to check this, if you upgraded it, all bets are off. Having a broken computer is normal after an upgrade.

I went to the Kingston site and they checked my system for ram compatibility. Ordered 8Gb's for about $200. The price of some ram has come down. and plan on installing the 64 bit version and dual booting with XP Pro. I will also get another sata hard drive, to dedicate to the 64 bit Vista install.
